Unfortunately, not every state or community has a prescription assistance program available, but those that do can provide invaluable support to family physicians. Before you refer any of your patients to a program in your area, find out more about the services they provide. For example, the program may have a limited formulary of free prescription drugs. Some programs may require the physician to fill out a referral form before a patient can receive assistance. Others require the patient to fill out an application form, so you might consider having some of these forms available in your office to hand out to eligible patients. You might also consider creating a brief patient handout that lists the programs in your area, their contact information, what services they provide and who is eligible.
