ASTTEQ: Action Santé Travesti(e)s et Transsexuel(le)s du Québec works to encourage the health and well-being of trans people through access to resources and support. We aim to develop and strengthen trans people’s social and medical support networks. We also work to educate health and social service workers regarding transsexuality. We provide information about the medical, social and legal aspects of transitioning and work to prevent HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and STIs. We offer weekly drop-ins for trans people, safer sex materials, a needle exchange, and we outreach to trans communities to give information and referrals to trans-friendly resources.
Hormone replacement therapy has been shown to have other beneficial effects. In a study women taking estrogen through HRT showed that the estrogen positively affects the prefrontal cortex by boosting the working memory. This suggests that estrogen may play a key role in certain frontal lobe functions in women. Women using HRT after menopause have no additional weight gain compared to women who do not use HRT. Also women who use HRT with an estrogen component show positive effects in their sex life (mainly increasing their sex drive and sexual sensitivity) but the effects are inconsistent across women. These sexual improvements may dissipate after receiving some forms of HRT for extended periods of time.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) (referred to as androstanolone or stanolone when used medically) can also be used in place of testosterone as an androgen. The availability of DHT is limited; it is not available in the United States or Canada, for instance, but it is available in certain European countries, including the United Kingdom , France , Spain , Belgium , Italy , and Luxembourg . DHT is available in formulations including topical gel, buccal or sublingual tablets, and as esters in oil for intramuscular injection. Relative to testosterone, and similarly to many synthetic AAS, DHT has the potential advantages of not being locally potentiated in so-called androgenic tissues that express 5α-reductase (as DHT is already 5α-reduced) and of not being aromatized into an estrogen (it is not a substrate for aromatase).
